The Guess Who's History

The Guess Who is a Canadian rock band that formed in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1965. The band initially consisted of lead singer Chad Allan, guitarist Randy Bachman, keyboardist Bob Ashley, bassist Jim Kale, and drummer Garry Peterson. After several line-up changes, the band's classic line-up consisted of Burton Cummings on vocals, Randy Bachman on guitar, Jim Kale on bass, and Garry Peterson on drums.

The Guess Who quickly gained popularity in Canada and the United States with hits such as "Shakin’ All Over," "These Eyes," "Laughing," and "Undun." Their success led to tours across North America, including iconic live performances at venues such as the Fillmore East in New York City, the Boston Tea Party in Boston, and the Whiskey a Go Go in Los Angeles.

In 1970, The Guess Who released their signature song "American Woman," which became their first number one hit in the United States. The song was controversial at the time, with its lyrics criticizing American society and the ongoing Vietnam War. It remains a staple of classic rock radio and has been covered by numerous artists over the years.

The Guess Who continued to release hits throughout the 1970s, including "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" and "Star Baby." In 1974, Randy Bachman left the band to form his own group, Bachman-Turner Overdrive. He was replaced by Kurt Winter and later by Don McDougall.

Despite the loss of Bachman, The Guess Who continued to tour and record throughout the 1970s. They released several albums that included hits such as "Clap for the Wolfman" and "Dancin' Fool." In 1975, Burton Cummings released a solo album, but he continued to perform and record with The Guess Who.

In the 1980s, The Guess Who experienced a resurgence of popularity thanks to classic rock radio and retro-themed TV shows such as "The Wonder Years." They continued to tour and release new music, including the albums "Wheatfield Soul" and "Road Food."

In 2000, The Guess Who were inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame. They continue to tour today, with original members Jim Kale and Garry Peterson still performing alongside new members such as keyboardist Leonard Shaw and guitarist Derek Sharp.

Fans of The Guess Who can still catch the band live in concert, with tickets available for shows across North America and beyond. Whether you're a longtime fan or a newcomer to their music, a live concert from The Guess Who is sure to be a memorable experience filled with classic hits and iconic rock and roll energy.
