Stanford Cardinal Football's History

Stanford Cardinal Football has a rich and storied history dating back over a century. The team is the athletic program that represents Stanford University in college football. The team has a long history of excellence, boasting some of the most accomplished coaches and players in the sport's history.

One of the most successful periods in Stanford football history came in the early 1900s. From 1900 to 1915, the team won four national championships and was coached by legendary coach, Pop Warner. During this time, the team was known for its innovative offense, including the use of the statue of liberty play, and was a dominant force in college football.

The 1920s saw a decline in Stanford's football program, but the team bounced back in the 1930s, winning two Rose Bowl games and producing star players like Frankie Albert. The team continued to have success in the 1940s and 1950s, including a national championship in 1940, and produced notable players like John Brodie and Bobby Garrett.

The 1960s saw the arrival of another legendary coach, John Ralston, who led the team to two Pac-8 conference championships and produced players like Jim Plunkett and Randy Vataha. The 1970s saw even more success for the team, with two Rose Bowl victories and a Heisman Trophy win for Plunkett.

The 1980s and 1990s were not as successful for Stanford football, but the program saw a resurgence in the 2000s under coach Jim Harbaugh. Harbaugh led the team to a 12-1 record in 2010, including a victory in the Orange Bowl and a #4 ranking in the final polls.

Since then, Stanford football has continued to have success under coaches David Shaw and Willie Taggart. The team has won three Pac-12 conference championships in the last decade and has produced notable players like Andrew Luck, Christian McCaffrey, and Bryce Love.

More About Stanford Cardinal Football

In the 2019 season, the Cardinal finished with a record of 4-8. Despite their struggles, there were still a few standout performances from individual players. Quarterback K.J. Costello threw for over 1,000 yards and six touchdowns before an injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. Running back Cameron Scarlett rushed for over 800 yards and five touchdowns, while tight end Colby Parkinson caught 48 passes for 589 yards and one touchdown.

That said, the 2019 season was a disappointment for Cardinal fans. The team failed to qualify for a bowl game for the first time since 2008, and it was clear that changes needed to be made if the program was going to return to its winning ways.

Heading into the 2020 season, the Cardinal were hoping to bounce back with a strong performance. However, the COVID-19 pandemic threw a wrench into those plans. The entire college football season was in jeopardy, with many conferences canceling or delaying their seasons. Eventually, the Pac-12 announced that it would play a shortened, conference-only schedule.

Stanford played just five games in the 2020 season, finishing with a record of 4-2. Quarterback Davis Mills was a bright spot for the team, throwing for over 1,500 yards and seven touchdowns. The defense was also solid, allowing just 24.2 points per game.
