Shortly after forming in San Francisco in 1973, Journey launched their four-decade career with the release of their eponymous debut album. They managed to put themselves on the map, however, overwhelming success was not immediate. The original lineup had undergone various shifts, including the departure of keyboardist/vocalist Gregg Rolie and additions of longtime members Steve Perry and Jonathan Cain. They reworked their musical style to emulate a sound similar to other popular bands like Boston and Foreigner, and by the early 1980s, Journey became one of the biggest band's in music. Their 1981 record Escape shot straight to No. 1 in the U.S. and has sold over 12 million copies worldwide, making it their best-selling record to date. The album featured their signature track "Don't Stop Believin'." However, upon its release, the song was not the smash single it came to be today and instead only saw moderate chart success.
Journey has since undergone various lineup changes and been on repeated hiatus over the years. However, they continue to perform and release new music today to millions of fans' delight. Their outstanding musical accolades include being the 25th best-selling band in the U.S. and a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Their music was also used in the jukebox musical Rock of Ages, which ran for six years on Broadway.
Journey's collection of hit songs include "Any Way You Want It," "Faithfully," "Open Arms," "Lovin,' Touchin,' Squeezin,'" "When You Love a Woman" and "Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)." However, their best-known song remains 1981's "Don't Stop Believin'," which saw a resurgence in popularity in the late 2000s, making it the best-selling digitally downloaded song that was released in the 20th century.
Journey's music, in particular "Don't Stop Believin'," has been featured in a number of movies and television series, including Glee, Family Guy, and The Sopranos.
