Arizona Coyotes History
The Arizona Coyotes began their 40-year history in Winnipeg as the original Winnipeg Jets. They spent the first few years of their existence playing in the World Hockey Association before getting absorbed into the National Hockey League in 1979. For the next 17 seasons, the franchise largely struggled in the NHL apart from the 1984-85 and 1986-87 seasons when they advanced to the playoffs.
In 1996, the team – under new owner Jerry Colangelo - relocated to Phoenix and became the Coyotes. They remained one of the league’s weaker teams on the ice despite building a roster of stars like Shane Doan, Keith Tkachuk and Jeremy Roenick, plus Hall of Famers Mike Gartner and Brett Hull. The Coyotes face tough competition in their conference, but remain one of the league’s most storied franchises with a devoted fan base.
