The Rolling Stones launched their impressive, record-breaking career over 50 years ago. Shortly after forming and playing small gigs around the U.K., they exploded onto the scene in 1964 following the footsteps of The Beatles before them with an early popularity that only surged over time. The Rolling Stones drew their main musical inspiration from blues artists like Bo Didley and Chuck Berry, so much so that their eponymous debut album consisted mostly of blues cover songs.
The band soon discovered their own unique sound thanks to the songwriting team of frontman Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. They experimented with the psychedelic rock sounds that began to dominate the 1960s but ultimately found their biggest success with their original love of blues/rock. The Rolling Stones entered the 1970s as one of the biggest bands in the world thanks to the overwhelming popularity of now-classic songs “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” and “Paint It Black.” They would go on to dominate musical charts throughout the 1970s and early 1980s before experiencing a shift in lineup and break for members’ solo projects.
Today, the Rolling Stones are still going strong and continue to sell out major venues across the world. Currently comprised of Jagger, Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood, The Rolling Stones have experienced an unmatched career in modern rock. Some of their outstanding career accolades include multiple Grammy Awards and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, on top of being one of the best-selling artists in history with nearly 250 million records sold.
The Rolling Stones’ Voodoo Lounge Tour was the highest-grossing tour of the 1990s, while their A Bigger Bang Tour was the highest-grossing of the 2000s.
The Rolling Stones have built up an impressive collection of hit songs that stand the test of time. Among their biggest hits are No. 1 smashes “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” “Get Off My Cloud,” “Paint It Black,” “Ruby Tuesday,” “Miss You,” “Angie,” “Honky Tonk Women” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”
