English composer Elton John first launched his career in the early 1960s primarily as a pianist and songwriter for DJM Records. A solo singing career quickly became his focus and by 1970, was upon him thanks to the success of his multi-Platinum single "Your Song." He soon became a cultural phenomenon thanks to his toe-tapping songs and eye-catching outfits he has become synonymous with. His popularity was equal in his native U.K. and the U.S. and rapidly grew throughout other countries with each song he released.
John's career has transcended radio waves and crossed over to success in theater and film. He has composed original music for the film (and later Broadway musical) The Lion King, plus popular musicals Aida and Billy Elliott. He has been a staple of Las Vegas' entertainment scene with two long-running residency shows at Caesars Palace Colosseum that brought in show goers from all over the world. The Rocket Man, as he's been dubbed, has played some of the most famous venues across the globe over the decades, but will soon come to an end. In 2018, he announced a massive, 300-date Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour to conclude his iconic performing career.
His remarkable achievements include multiple Grammys, an Academy Award, Tony Award, induction into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as well as receiving the Kennedy Center Honor. On top of that, John has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and has been famously knighted by Queen Elizabeth II.
Elton John's catalog of songs is vast, and he is decorated with over 50 Top 40 hits making it difficult to name them all. Some of his best-known tracks are "Rocketman," "Bennie and the Jets," "Candle in the Wind," "Your Song," "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me," "Crocodile Rock" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road." In addition, John is celebrated for his compositions for The Lion King and Aida, including "Circle of Life," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Written in the Stars."
John's 1997 re-working of his 1974 song "Candle in the Wind" is the second highest-selling single of all time, according to the Guinness Book of Records. Its original lyrics were re-written to honor John's close friend, the late Princess Diana. He has performed the version live only once, televised for a global audience at Diana's funeral.
