Alabama have cultivated one of the most celebrated careers in country music, spanning five decades and full of dozens of hit records. They formed in 1969 and spent years performing small gigs throughout their home state of Alabama before landing a record deal in 1977. They earned some chart play with debut single “I Want to Be With You Tonight,” but it wasn’t until their 1980 album My Home’s in Alabama did their career really take off, thanks to singles like “Why Lady Why” and “Tennessee River.” Alabama dominated music throughout the 1980s and 90s with their songs earning play on both country and adult contemporary charts. Despite hiatuses taken throughout the 2000s, they are back together and celebrating a milestone 50 years in music.
The band – currently comprised of frontman Randy Owen, bassist Teddy Gentry and guitarist Jeff Cook – have been named one of the most influential country artists of the 20th century. Their many career accolades include multiple Grammys, Billboard Awards, American Music Awards, Country Music Association Awards and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Alabama has seen 40 singles reach No. 1 on various music charts, with 33 of those topping the Billboard Hot Country chart.
Among Alabama’s several No. 1 hit singles are “If You’re Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band),” “Mountain Music,” “Tennessee River,” “There’s No Way,” “Song of the South,” “I’m in a Hurry (And Don’t Know Why),” “Can’t Keep a Good Man Down,” and “You’ve Got the Touch.” They are also known for collaborations with Alison Krauss (“Come Find Me”), Lionel Richie (“Deep River Woman”) and Brad Paisley (“Old Alabama”).
