ZZ Top Announce 50th Anniversary Tour with Cheap Trick, Lynyrd Skynyrd

ZZ Top are celebrating 50 years in music with a massive anniversary tour. The rock veterans will travel cross-country later this year alongside Cheap Trick and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

ZZ Top will launch the trek August 16 in Ridgefield, Washington. They’ll hit an additional 33 cities before wrapping October 20 in West Palm Beach, Florida. The lengthy itinerary includes stops in Chicago, Phoenix, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Kansas City. Pals Cheap Trick will serve as opening act for a majority of dates, while Lynyrd Skynyrd (who have extended their farewell tour through the fall) are slated to appear at August 23-24 gigs in California.

When it comes to their milestone anniversary, members Billy Gibbons, Frank Beard and Dusty Hill promise to stay rooted in their original sound founded half a century ago.

“It’s been five decades, and I think we’re starting to get pretty good at this,” Gibbons said in a statement. “We’re truly excited to be appearing across the continent this summer and fall, playing our bluesy kind of rock like we started in ’69. The beards, Frank’s excepted, are perhaps a bit longer, yet nothing else has changed. We’re keeping it that way.”

Prior to the tour’s launch, ZZ Top will also perform a trio of shows to commemorate their career longevity in their home state of Texas. Their “50th Anniversary Texas Bash” will bring the iconic band to Austin, Dallas, and Houston amphitheaters next month, with Cheap Trick and Bad Company also taking part.

Since their founding in 1969, ZZ Top has released 15 albums, their most recent being 2012’s La Futura. In 2004, the famed group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
