Bruce Springsteen now has another grand accomplishment to his name. His Springsteen on Broadway series will receive a special Tony Award this June, it was announced Tuesday.
While announcing the full list of this year’s Tony Award nominations, Hamilton star Leslie Odom Jr. recognized Springsteen on Broadway‘s achievements, calling it a “theatergoing experience of extraordinary dimensions.” It has been widely praised from fans and critics alike, with many calling the raw emotion Springsteen exudes while telling compelling stories a definitive highlight.
Rumors have been swirling about whether The Boss would perform at the June 10 award show, and while nothing is confirmed, news that he’s a Tony winner certainly makes for favorable odds that a victory performance can be expected.
The honor puts Springsteen closer to achieving EGOT status, given to those who’ve received wins at each of the entertainment industry’s four major awards: Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, and Tonys. He received an Oscar for Best Original Song in 1994 for “Streets of Philadelphia” from Philadelphia. Over the course of his career, Springsteen also collected 20 Grammys, his most recent win being from 2010. Should he reach EGOT status with a future Emmy win, he’d join the likes of fellow winners Barbra Streisand, James Earl Jones, Audrey Hepburn, Liza Minnelli and Quincy Jones, among others.
Springsteen on Broadway has been a bona fide box-office smash since it opened last fall. The rocker originally booked an eight-week stint at the 975-seat Walter Kerr Theatre, allowing him the opportunity to perform songs from his vast catalog in a far more intimate setting than he’s grown accustomed to. Fans filled the venue every single performance, leading Springsteen to extend the residency ten more weeks. He’s continued to add shows by popular demand, and is currently set to be a Broadway mainstay through December after a total of 236 performances.
Given the show’s immense popularity, scoring tickets proves to be rather costly for fans. Ticket Club data shows that the average Springsteen on Broadway ticket runs between $1,500 and $1,600, with the cheapest-sold ticket on record coming in at just under $500. Nevertheless, the experience of seeing The Boss in an intimate venue, delivering passionate performances of songs and opening up about the stories that inspired them is priceless.
Catch the legendary rocker take home a special Tony for Springsteen on Broadway when the Tony Awards air Sunday, June 10 8 p.m. ET on CBS. Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban share hosting duties.
