The dynasty isn’t dead. A decade after their last World Series win, the New York Yankees are on pace to add a record-extending 28th title to their history books. But after their sweep of the Minnesota Twins in the ALDS, Yankee fans will likely need to dish out more to catch a playoff game. Our sales data indicates that a deep run for the Yanks would cause MLB Playoff ticket prices to spike.
In their three-game rout of the Twins, Yankees fans paid roughly $200 to catch the first two games in the Bronx. Tickets went for about $40 less for Game 3 in Minnesota. The series also garnered higher sales in fewer games than the league’s other three Division Series.
As the Yankees play for the American League pennant, demand for tickets will only get higher. Therefore, you can expect ticket prices to spike, particularly in the Big Apple. Yankees playoff home games have been some of the most costly in recent years. Their 2017 Wild Card bid against the Twins raised the average price of admission into Yankee Stadium to $210 – more than double what the Diamondbacks-Rockies NL Wild Card Game garnered. Last year’s Wild Card round was no different. The Yankees-A’s tilt in New York cost patrons $255. That figure was nearly twice the $130 price tag to see the Cubs-Rockies in the NL.
After many dominant seasons with Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and Alex Rodriguez, Yankees playoff tickets were relatively low in the early part of the decade. But after a few lackluster years where they failed to qualify, fans are eager to see a deep October run. And as a result, they are willing to pay the price to witness a great comeback story. See how Yankees playoff ticket prices have shifted over the years in the chart below.
Yankees MLB Playoff Ticket Prices Through The Years
But higher MLB Playoff ticket prices aren’t shocking considering Yankee tickets are consistently at a premium. Yankees tickets in 2019 sold for an average of $70. The Bronx Bombers trail only the Cubs and Red Sox for the season’s priciest tickets at an average cost of $78 and $74, respectively. Those three clubs have been the highest-priced teams since the 2014 season. Therefore, it’s hardly a surprise that their playoff runs come with a hefty price tag as well.
Looking ahead to the rest of the postseason, fans will likely be facing high ticket costs if the Astros advance to the ALCS. Houston saw ALCS tickets averaging $209 and $225 the last two seasons, respectively. Those series’ (against the Yankees in 2017 and Red Sox in 2018) gave some reprieve to Northeast-based fans. Houston was the hottest market both years with the best-selling game of each series occurring at Minute Maid Park. On the other side of the bracket, playoff tickets are fairly lower. The Braves, Cardinals, Dodgers and Nationals have been fixtures of the postseason the past few years, perhaps dropping demand for tickets.
No matter what happens on the diamond in the coming weeks, MLB Playoffs and the Fall Classic are on track to be one of the year’s hottest events. Grab your tickets for one of the last games this season here.
