Roseanne Barr is ready to return to the road. The comedian has announced her new stand-up comedy tour with Andrew Dice Clay, dubbed the Mr. and Mrs. America Tour.
Barr and Clay revealed the joint tour in matching Instagram posts of a promotional photo in which they are both clad in patriotic gear. The tour will get underway September 19 in Huntington, New York with tickets going on sale next week. However, additional dates and details remain unknown at this time.
The tour comes a year after Barr came under fire for racist comments made in a tweet targeted at former Barack Obama aide Valerie Jarrett. She likened the political consultant to an “ape” and also made disparaging comments about Chelsea Clinton and George Soros. As a result, ABC cancelled the reboot of Barr’s famous sitcom Roseanne despite the show’s dominant ratings within its first season. ABC president Channing Dungey dismissed Barr’s comments as “abhorrent, repugnant and inconsistent” with the network’s values.
Barr offered apologies for her words and expressed regret that her comment ultimately caused the show’s cast and crew to lose their jobs. However, not long after the controversial cancellation, network executives brought back the concept and cast (minus Barr) for the successful new spin-off series, The Conners.
Clay spoke out about his co-headliner’s controversial comments while previewing material fans can expect in their upcoming shows. The comic – who in 1990 became the first comedian to sell out Madison Square Garden – told Fox News that the Mr. and Mrs. America tour was conceived over the political discourse dominating the country today.
“America really needs to lighten up and not worry about the words comedians use because it’s all we have,” Clay said in reference to the backlash Barr received. “She’s a comic because she’s wacky. I’ve known her since we were kids. When people ask about what she said, I say, ‘She’s a comic!’ We gotta stop policing comedians. This is America!”
Barr, 66, has stayed largely out of the spotlight within the past year. She returned to the stage earlier this year in a one-off show with Clay in Las Vegas. Meanwhile, Clay appeared alongside Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born, which also featured fellow funnyman Dave Chappelle in a rare dramatic role.
