NCAA football bowl season is upon us – with the Football Bowl Subdivision semifinals set for December 29 and the remainder of the bowl field filled in with a mix of traditional conference match-ups and wild card games. The College Football Playoff will feature top-seed Alabama vs. No. 4 Oklahoma at the Capital One Orange Bowl, played at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium and No. 2 seed Clemson vs. No. 3 Notre Dame at the Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The victors of those games will face off on Monday January 7 at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA for the National Championship.

Unbeaten Alabama, which has won two of the four College Football Playoff National Championships to date and finished as runner-up on a third, dominated through much of the season, though saw a tough test in the SEC final against Georgia. Behind 2018 championship MVP Tua Tagovailoa’s 3,353 passing yards and 37 TDs and a defense which has allowed opponents to score more than 20 just five times this season, Alabama is hunting for its sixth NCAA championship since Nick Saban took over as head coach in 2007.
Oklahoma has been an offensive juggernaut all season – scoring an average of 49.3 points per game. But their defense has been equally as porous on the other side, allowing 32.4 points against per game. In the Sooners’ lone loss of the season, they scored 45 points on Texas, only to see the Longhorns hang 48 on them.

The only bowl game featuring a pair of unbeaten teams (though the championship will follow suit if Alabama can win against Oklahoma), this one pits a Clemson squad which cruised to the ACC crown – including a 42-10 league title game win over Pittsburgh – against a Notre Dame team which hopes to fare far better than its last chance at a title, which saw Alabama drub the Irish 42-14 in the 2012 BCS title game.

A bid to a New Year’s Day date against Texas may be a bitter pill for Georgia, which went toe-to-toe with Alabama in the SEC Championship over the weekend before falling to the eventual CFP Playoff No. 1 seed, narrowly missing a spot in the semifinals. Instead they will head to New Orleans and take on a Texas squad that itself fell to a semifinalist over the weekend in its Big 12 Championship loss to rival Oklahoma.
Texas, led by QB Sam Ehlinger, finished 9-4 on the season, recovering after a surprising loss to Maryland to open its season. Georgia’s only loss besides Alabama came against LSU.

Rose Bowl: Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Washington Huskies

Five straight wins to close out the regular season weren’t quite enough to land Ohio State in a playoff semifinal, as its lone loss of the year – coming against Perdue – cost Urban Meyer’s team dearly. Three of those wins down the stretch came against ranked foes, with Michigan State, rival Michigan and Northwestern all falling to the Big Ten champion.
Washington finished 10-3 on the season and clinched the Pac-12 title with its second victory on the year over Utah. The trip to the Rose bowl is the first in 17 years for the Huskies, who are keyed by all-time leading rusher Myles Gaskin.

Quarterback McKenzie Milton is out for the year after an injury prior to the AAC Championship win over Memphis, but Darriel Mack Jr. has scored six touchdowns in relief. If they would like to make another claim at a shared national title with whoever claims victory on January 7, they’ll need to take down an LSU team that defeated both Georgia and Auburn this season.

New Year’s Day action opens with this matchup of 8-4 teams. Mississippi State struggled through the middle third of its schedule, losing three out of four games against SEC opponents, though it did pick up wins against Auburn and Texas A&M around that time. That win over the Aggies started a 4-1 closing run to their regular season – the lone blemish coming via a 24-0 loss against Alabama. Iowa will have to play its Bowl without starting TE Noah Fant, who opted to skip the final game of his career to work on NFL prep (and presumably avoid injury).
