Comedy legends Dave Chappelle and Jon Stewart are joining forces for a brief comedy tour, promoter Live Nation announced today. The outing will consist of seven shows across three cities this June.
The short trek kicks off June 11 in Boston with the first of three shows at the city’s Wang Theatre. From there, Chappelle and Stewart will head to Houston for two shows and wrap up the tour with a two-night stint in El Paso June 23 and 24. It will mark their first time sharing a stage since last August, when Stewart appeared as a special guest during Chappelle’s residency at Radio City Music Hall.
While they may seem like an unlikely pair, Chappelle and Stewart have followed rather similar career trajectories. Both began in stand-up before gaining attention through various TV and film roles. By the early aughts, they were household names thanks to their acclaimed projects at Comedy Central. Stewart tackled news and political commentary at the helm of The Daily Show for 16 seasons while Chappelle served as the mastermind of hit sketch-comedy program Chappelle’s Show.
After their respective departures from the network, both comics limited their appearances but never lost their faithful fan following. In recent years, Dave Chappelle has rejuvenated his career with a return to stand-up full time. He scored an instant hit when he partnered with Netflix to release two new specials in March 2017. Within the first month of availability, the two went on to become the most viewed comedy specials in Netflix history and prompted three more Chappelle specials to be released over the year. As previously mentioned, Chappelle had a headlining residency at Radio City Music Hall last summer and has also collaborated with musician John Mayer for their Controlled Danger show.
Both acts put a heavy focus on social issues, current events and the ongoing political landscape in their sets, which will make for an evening of cultural relevancy coupled with rollicking laughter.
