2017 Naughty or Nice List: Celebrity edition

With Christmas quickly approaching, the scramble is on to land a spot on Santa’s nice list, and even celebrities aren’t immune from Kris Kringle’s watchful eye. There’s plenty of sports, music and entertainment stars who can expect presents this year, along with those who can expect a lump of coal. We present this year’s definitive Naughty or Nice List: Celebrity edition.

Nice List

  1. Ariana Grande – “Side to Side” singer Ariana Grande was at the epicenter of tragedy when a terrorist bomb exploded during her concert at Manchester Arena in May, killing 22. Though hurt and grieving, Grande responded graciously to the incident by holding a benefit concert to help the victims, their families, and the community heal. The benefit show, dubbed One Love Manchester, featured performances by Grande, Miley Cyrus, Coldplay, Niall Horan and more artists, and raised $13 million dollars. la-et-ms-manchester-ariana-grande-benefit-20170604
  2. Adele – Like Grande, vocal powerhouse Adele earned high praise for her advocacy and involvement following another tragedy to strike the U.K. The Grammy winner focused her energy on helping victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, which killed 80 people and injured several more. She urged concert-goers on her world tour to donate to recovery efforts, attended candle-lit vigils, brought cake and sweets to fire crews that fought the blaze and even hosted a private movie screening for children hospitalized by the fire. 02-adele-grammys-show-2017-billboard-1548
  3. JJ WattHouston Texans defensive end JJ Watt may not be able to help Houston win football games as he’s currently on the injured list, but he helped the city with a much bigger feat. Watt became a tireless fundraising force in the wake of Hurricane Harvey, which battered Houston with devastating floods when it made landfall in August. Watt had raised over $35 million dollars in a matter of weeks after Harvey and was named co-Sportsperson of the Year by Sports Illustrated as a result, an honor which he shares with José Altuve of the Houston Astrosjj-watt-houston-texans-return-nrg-stadium
  4. Lin-Manuel Miranda – The creative genius behind Hamilton was at the forefront of leading Hurricane Maria relief efforts in his native Puerto Rico. Miranda helped raise millions through donations to the non-profit Hispanic Federation and recruited an all-star group of Latin artists to collaborate on the benefit single “Almost Like Praying,” which featured Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello, Luis Fonsi, Gloria Estefan and Marc Anthony. On top of that, he delighted the island’s Hamilton fans by announcing he’d return to star in the production during its 2019 run in Puerto Rico.  06LINMANUEL-master768.jpg
  5. Fall Out Boy – Chicago-based rockers Fall Out Boy devoted their Mania Tour to recognizing superb community service and charitable work. The band created the Fall Out Boy fund in hopes to give back to their city with their first order of business going to toward educating local children on the health and environmental benefits of organic, locally-grown food. In addition, FOB dedicated each stop on their Mania Tour to a local hero who has spread kindness within their community, and made donations to the charity of each hero’s choosing. FallOutBoy_BrendanWalter_2017.jpg

Naughty List

  1. Lebron James – “King James” is often praised as one of sports’ greatest champions both on and off the court, but his aggressive antics in a November Cavs vs. Heat game earned him a spot on the Naughty List. James was ejected from the game late in the third quarter after throwing an air punch towards the official and using vulgar language in the heat of the moment. It marked the first time the Cleveland legend had been tossed from a game in his 15-year career.  d6ab391e5080d7018f49ea80ecccc214
  2. Taylor Swift – The old Taylor can’t come to the phone right now…cause she’s dead. Taylor Swift‘s reputation was dissected more than ever before this year, and while she used single “Look What You Made Me Do” to proclaim the death of the “old Taylor” and the birth of a new unapologetic one, Swift’s attitude adjustment was a hostile one. The song and its revealing music video appeared to throw further shade at Kanye West, Kim Kardashian and Katy Perry, all of whom remain linked to the singer for very public feuds. Screen-Shot-2017-08-27-at-115343
  3. Justin Bieber – The Biebs angered fans when he abruptly canceled the final string of shows on his Purpose World Tour earlier this summer, citing “unforeseen circumstances.” 14 shows across North America and Asia were scrapped just weeks before they were scheduled, including what would have been Bieber’s first-ever stadium gigs. During springtime shows that went on as scheduled, he was widely panned for mumbling through his Spanish verses of smash-hit Luis Fonsi collab “Despacito,” appearing lazy and aloof. Not long before canceling the tour, the “Sorry” singer was banned from performing in China by the Chinese government who cited him as a “badly behaved entertainer.”
