Year in Review: Hamilton Keeps Top Spot Among Best-Selling Broadway Shows

As we count down to 2019, Ticket Club is reviewing the past year in the entertainment industry. Follow along with our series as we explore the best of 2018’s live events, determined by internal sales data.

Bruce Springsteen gave his best effort, but in the end, Hamilton still came away at the top of this year’s best-selling Broadway shows.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s theatrical phenomenon has not slowed down on the Great White Way yet – three years after it invaded the Richard Rodgers Theatre. In fact, overall excitement for the show is perhaps even greater now that it is in the midst of a massive North American tour. While Hamilton continued to pull the biggest amount of overall sales, No. 2 best-seller Springsteen on Broadway has dominated in its own right.

Bruce Springsteen’s intimate Broadway concert series, which wraps this month after over 230 performances, was a theater juggernaut unlike anything seen before. The Boss shattered records for the outlandish ticket prices into the show, averaging around $1,800 apiece on the secondary market. Not even in its pre-Tonys prime did Hamilton score such staggering ticket prices, as it currently sits at an all-time average of $479 per ticket.

A trio of Disney theatrical productions found their way onto the list, led by Frozen – The Musical. The stage adaptation of the 2013 animated smash debuted on Broadway earlier this year and earned several nominations at this year’s Tony Awards. Joining it within the Top 10 are two of Disney’s long-running stage spectaculars, The Lion King and Aladdin.

Tina Fey’s Mean Girls – in its first year on Broadway – used its massive movie fan following to edge out Wicked, which celebrated 15 years at the Gershwin Theatre in 2018.
