Upcoming July 2024 Broadway and Off-Broadway Shows

As summer takes hold in New York City, the theater scene is gearing up for new productions. July 2024 offers a diverse array of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows ranging from comedies to dramas. Here’s a rundown of the most anticipated theater events this month:

Off-Broadway Shows

Someone Spectacular

Kicking off on July 17, 2024 at The Pershing Square Signature Center’s Romulus Linney Courtyard Theatre, “Someone Spectacular” is a new play by Domenica Feraud. Directed by Tatiana Pandiani, the cast includes Gamze Ceylan, Alison Cimmet, Delia Cunningham, Marcus Gladney Jr., Ana Cruz Kayne, and Damian Young. 

“Someone Spectacular” delves into the lives of individuals navigating the complexities of ambition, identity, and human connection. The play’s official opening is slated for July 31.

Six Characters

Phillip Howze’s “Six Characters” will make its debut at Lincoln Center Theater’s Claire Tow Theater with previews starting on July 13, and the official opening on July 29.

Directed by Dustin Willis, the cast includes  CG Will Cobbs, Seven F.B. Duncombe, Claudia Logan, Julia Robertson, and Seret Scott. “Six Characters” offers a unique theatrical experience where the boundaries between reality and fiction as well as power and belonging. 

Empire: The Musical

“Empire: The Musical” at New World Stages Stage 1 began previews on July 1 and officially opens on July 11. This original musical features a book, music, and lyrics by Caroline Sherman and Robert Hull, with direction by Cady Huffman. The ensemble cast includes Danny Iktomi Bevins, Monique Candelaria, and Kaitlyn Davidson.

“Empire: The Musical” looks through the lens of three generations of New Yorkers, from the Roaring Twenties to the Bicentennial Year of 1976, all while exploring the human spirit and determination that shaped the city’s skyline. 

Broadway Shows

Oh, Mary!

Returning to the stage after a successful Off-Broadway run, “Oh, Mary!” began previews at the Lyceum Theatre on June 26, with the official slated for July 11. 

Created and starring Cole Escola, this dark comedy reimagines the life of Mary Todd Lincoln in the days leading up to her husband Abraham Lincoln’s assassination.  Conrad Ricamora portrays the President with Sam Pinkelton serving as director.   

Job

Following its acclaimed Off-Broadway engagements, Max Wolf Friedlich’s “Job” will make its Broadway debut at the Hayes Theatre, with previews starting July 15 and an official opening on July 30.

Starring Peter Friedman and Sydney Lemmon, this psychological thriller delves into the complexities of online identity and personal crisis through a gripping narrative. Friedman is set to portray Loyd, a crisis therapist. Lemmon is slated to star as Jane, an employee at a major tech company who finds herself in a crisis after becoming the subject of a viral video.

Once Upon a Mattress

If you missed the New York City Center Encores! production, “Once Upon a Mattress,” is coming to Broadway’s Hudson Theatre for a limited engagement this summer. With previews beginning on July 31, and an official opening on August 12.

“Once Upon a Mattress” is a musical comedy adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Princess and the Pea.” Sutton Foster, Michael Urie, Ana Gasteyer, Will Chase, Daniel Breaker, and Brooks Ashmanskas are set to star in the Broadway production.
