Mean Girls<\/em> fans have only one thing to say about the 2004 high school comedy’s turn as a Broadway musical: “That is so fetch!” The beloved film (and its endless parade of memorable quotes) is about to make its stage debut<\/a> at the National Theatre in Washington, D.C. before premiering on Broadway in March. The hilarious story about a former home-schooled teen messing with the biggest clique around will undoubtedly be the talk of the theatre world when it premieres. In honor of the upcoming stage debut of The Plastics, here’s four other cult classics that could strike similar success as a stage show.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Clueless<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Often viewed as the Mean Girls<\/em> of the 90s, Clueless<\/em>\u00a0remains iconic over 20 years after its release. It offered a different take on the typical high school comedy in which the female lead embodied the stereotypes of the superficial, popular Valley girl but was still someone the audience could root for. Interesting 90s fashion choices aside, Clueless<\/em>\u00a0is beloved for its quirky storyline, witty banter, and lovable characters.<\/p>\n

Napolean Dynamite<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The ultimate sleeper hit when it was released in 2004, Napolean Dynamite<\/em> went from being a lazy, low budget, MTV-produced film to a pop culture phenomenon that spawned a million “Vote for Pedro” shirts. Will a potential Napolean<\/em> run on Broadway be as huge as say,\u00a0Hamilton<\/a><\/em>? Highly unlikely, but it would still have all the makings for a feel-good, underdog story and really, who doesn’t love that?<\/p>\n

Pitch Perfect<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Pitch Perfect<\/em> took the concept of University a capella groups and turned it into one of the most successful movie franchises of recent years, with the third film in the series slated to open in movie theaters December 22. The films are already noted for their musical arrangements and dance numbers by the Barden Bellas, setting it up perfectly for a transition to Broadway. Another plus? There is opportunity for original film stars and seasoned Broadway actors Skylar Astin (Jesse) and Ben Platt (Benji) to reprise their roles. Aca-awesome.<\/p>\n

Any John Hughes movie<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, Pretty in Pink<\/em>, etc. All of the 80s comedies from the late writer\/producer\/director have transcended time and continue to resonate with each new generation that watches them. With all of Hughes’ films so fiercely treasured to this day, it’s hard to pick a single one best suited for a stint on Broadway. That being said, we’d be happy to see any of them turned into a stage production.<\/p>\n

Mean Girls<\/em>\u00a0will take the stage at Washington’s National Theatre October 31 through December 3 before making its Broadway debut March 12. Tony Award-winning director and choreographer Casey Nicholaw (The Book of Mormon<\/a>, Aladdin<\/a><\/em>) will be at the helm of the production.<\/p>\n
